These two are inseparable! :)

If you think these two best friends should appear in my portfolio, let me know by giving them a great rating in my sketchbook

Do Schools Today Kill Creativity?

This is a really interesting video that Penelope Dullaghan posted on her blog. It’s definitely worth watching!

Illustration Friday: Excess

This is my submission for Illustration Friday! Yay, my first one! This weeks theme is ‘Excess’ and I immediately thought of the Holidays! Excess presents, food, etc… and how appropriate to use a pig ;) Don’t forget to head over to my sketchbook to give Piggy a rating!

New Illo: It’s Snowing!

Here’s an illustration I’ve been working on this week. I’m obviously in a wintery mood! :) We’ve been getting quite a lot of snow here in Ottawa - a big difference from this time of year in Nova Scotia (where I’m originally from)! I need to get my act together and start making submissions for Illustration Friday. This past week’s topic ‘Zoo’ just wasn’t festive enough for my liking ;) But that’s besides the point…

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this one! I’m still trying to get my new illustration style down so I’d love to hear if you feel it fits in with my other illustrations and if my kid’s are consistent with the style. I wasn’t quite sure how to show the glass of the window so I added a light opacity of white and cleared a spot for the kid’s faces (just like they wiped off the frost). Does that work? Is there another way I could do it? I’d love to hear your thoughts! …or just tell me what you think by rating it in my sketchbook!

Thanks everyone!

‘Seasonal Facelifts’ to Come!

As with many other creative individuals, I love change. My plan for this website is to change the design seasonally. I love the changing seasons and will update my site at the beginning of each new season. Especially here in Canada, the changing seasons are so beautiful, and they’re such an inspiration in my artwork. The design won’t change completely (so you’ll still know where you are!), I just plan to change the main illustration and text/accent colours to match. So it’ll be more of a ’seasonal facelift’ rather than a complete redesign :)

I’d love to hear your thoughts on my website design and general usability. Is it easy to get around? Are there features I should add? Elements that are unnecessary? It would be great to get your feedback and I’ll make an effort to incorporate all your great ideas!

Welcome to Rachelle Anne Miller Illustration!

Wow, I am just so excited to finally have this blog online! I don’t think anyone understands (except for maybe my husband) how long I’ve wanted to do this!Let me start off by introducing myself. My name is Rachelle (pronounced ra-shelle), I’m 23, live in Ontario, Canada and am married to my wonderful husband, Brad.

I love art, anything and everything creative and adore all things small and cute! I currently work as a Graphic Designer but would love to get involved in Children’s Book Illustration. I studied Design as NSCAD University in Nova Scotia, Canada so my background is mostly in design, but ever since I could hold I pencil, I’ve loved drawing and painting.I am just reeling with ideas for this blog and website and I can’t wait to bring these ideas to life. I want to use this blog to track my journey to becoming a children’s illustrator. I am also looking to connect with illustrators/editors/publishers in this field and hopefully get a contract for a children’s book! I plan to participate in Illustration Friday, Monday Art Day, and other online groups to get to know everyone out there, practice my illustration skills, and build my portfolio.

How this site will work:

Now if you’ve looked through my site, you may be surprised to see that there isn’t much illustration content. I’m going to try something new - I want YOU to help me build my illustration portfolio! I will post an illustration in my sketchbook where there will also be a star rating system. You can rate the illustration out of 5. Any illustration with a score of 4 out of 5 or better will be moved to the portfolio section (with a minimum of 10 votes). I’m not sure how well this will work so I’m just going to try it for a few months and see how things go!

I will talk more about myself and all of my exciting ideas very soon! Thanks so much for stopping by!
