New Art: Something a little different…
Published in: Illustration
So much can be done when two little boys are spending the day with their Nana… I might have even had a bit of an artist breakthrough today! I’ve really been rethinking my art lately. I’ve been questioning the work I’m producing and asking myself if this is truly art I would buy at a store for my kids. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. I want my work to be a bit more painterly and look a little less digital. I also want there to be more ‘mood’ or ‘atmosphere’ in my pieces. I want them to tell a bit of a deeper story and I think I’ve scratched the surface a bit with this latest piece. You can see some close-up shots in my Etsy store :) I would love some feedback!

Rachelle,
I think that your work is brilliant. I love your previous illustrations and you were the first artist to inspire me to chase my dream and become an illustrator. It’s been over two years now and I feel thrilled with my choice (despite my lack of time, since like you, I also have two little kids at home) but I rethink my painting process every day. I believe that’s how it gets better – when we are never completely satisfied with the result.
I recently added some texture to my brushes in Photoshop, so the illustration could look more like a real painting. It seems you have done something similar and I like it. I also like the colors and the fact you are exploring different palettes.
I also wanted to add that I feel sorry you didn’t settle in in Australia. We lived there for 2 year and even though it was I beautiful and safe place to live, I knew right away we didn’t belong there. So we moved to Canada and never been happier since then (I’m originally from Brazil, but have lived in many different places all over the world).
Well, I hope you have more and more opportunities to create from now on. I really love your art!
Love,
Luciana
Ps: love the birds up there, on your blog header.
I like much much your creations !
Luciana Azevedo – Thanks so much for your comment! I’m so happy to hear that I’ve inspired you to pursue your art. It’s such an emotional satisfying job :) You are complete right about the texture brushes.. the more I familiarize with Photoshop, the more I’m able to branch out and try new things. I love the textures and depth I can achieve with some of the more interesting brushes.
Take care!
Dear Rachelle, Its been almost 3 years that I read your beautiful blog. You are truly a talented artist and was (is) a great inspiration to me in my personal life and my artwork. One fun and amazing thing that I discover in new Photoshop version is how the brushes work. Its awesome, I specially love hoe the wash watercolour work and it really gives a painting feels and mood! Now Im only in the stage of trying but Im gonna post something about it later!Cant wait to see more of your awesome tryouts!good luck and be happy always <3

Love this! Everett’s little boy fascination isn’t dinosaurs or cars or diggers – it’s space, and all things planets and the milky way. This would be so sweet for him once we’re all settled again :)
Shiva – I’m happy that my work inspires you :) I look forward to seeing your experimentation with some new brushes!
Sheri – Thanks for your comment! Isaac is the same – he has always loved space and wants to be an astronaut when he grows up! He’s never cared for the other typical boy stuff either. I made this piece especially for him :)
