Simple Outlines: Yay or Nay?
Published in: Design, Illustration
My personal design style is simple, clean, and fairly neutral. I love being inspired by nature and natural colour palettes. I’ve been exploring more neutral colour combinations as they really resonate with me at this point in my life. I’ve been toying with the idea of selling some prints as simple outlines on interesting textured papers. Here is a little preview. What do you think? Are you missing the bright colours from my past work? I really appreciate the input :)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE them! I think they are perfect :-) !
So beautiful and such a good idea. Hope you are settled and thriving.
I love your art. The fact that most of it relates to the yournger generation makes me want to put color in it. I did a similar experiment with a Humpty Dumpty stamp and the out come was: 1. color it if it is for youth 2. outline for adult is perfectly ok. The real deal is the sentiment that you put with the art work.
Good luck

The textured paper sounds interesting but personally I prefer the colours. Also want to tell you that I love your work!

WOW !!Rachelle ,this is an awesome idea! I also never thought about outlining my artwork!but I really like what you this!specially for greeting cards!would be so cute! :) <3
Thanks Shiva! I’m glad I can inspire your work :)
Although I’ve always been a fan of your colorful artwork, I must say, I rather like the idea of the simple outlines. It allows me, the user, to use my imagination as to how to color the images, and not be “influenced” in any way. Not that it’s a bad idea by any means, but I think sometimes we’ll take the lazy way out and feel the artist knows best (which typically they do), than use it as a learning tool to choose our colors that compliment or may match. This way it gets us out of the box!!
Oops, and as far as you selling your artwork that way, I think it’s cool!! Again, let imagination fill in the color. After all many years ago we only had black and white photos! This is the pen and ink sketches – what could be nicer?
Cheryl O – Thanks for your comment! I think the outlines also create a very neutral theme that work with many decor styles/colours. It can compliment any home :) And it’s always nice to try something new!
I love both styles but your colour ones sing to me :)
Thanks for your input Karen!
